AbstractIn this thesis, a Graphic Statics approach is utilized for the optimization of truss structures. Unlike conventional techniques that involve modifying the geometry of the structure through various steps (the form diagram); in optimization based on graphic statics, design variables are selected from the force domain (the force diagram). Graphic statics has several unique features compared to other common approaches. Since this method depends on reciprocal graphical relations between geometry and forces, there is no need to calculate the stiffness of members. Furthermore, by working with force diagrams, structural equilibrium is ensured; and there is no need for additional methods to satisfy this condition. As only solutions in equilibrium are valid, the number of design variables is reduced. It's also not necessary to predefine the locations of applied loads (or reactions), these can be changed during optimization. The method easily determines compressive and tensile stresses; providing all the necessary information to obtain the total load path of the structure using form and force diagrams. Graphic statics can easily incorporate restrictions or constraints on the geometry of the problem and the forces of the elements. Using the Williot-Mohr diagram, we analyze and optimize statically indeterminate trusses graphically, which also provides topology optimization for trusses.Using the properties of graph theory, the geometrical relations between form and force diagrams is written algebraically. The formulas derived from the reciprocal relations between form and force diagrams are equivalent to the equilibrium equations used in matrix analysis of self-stress systems.
