AbstractThis study is on the effect of TiO2 doped MWCNTs and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and the combination of these hydrophobic nanoparticles with oleic acid on free and forced convection heat transfer, breakdown voltage, viscosity, viscosity index, and thermophysical properties including thermal conductivity coefficient, volumetric specific heat, thermal resistance, and thermal diffusion coefficient. The novelty of this study is the use of these nanoparticles individually and in combination in transformer oil and the experimental investigation of the properties of nanofluids. In the first step, nanoparticles were synthesized, and nanoparticles were confirmed using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX analyses. In the second step, nanofluids were synthesized with single nanoparticles in weight percentages of 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 and nanofluids in optimal concentration with a combination of nanoparticles at 0.1% by weight. The stability of these nanofluids was investigated by DLS and zeta potential analyses. To investigate free and forced heat transfer, a heat transfer system similar to a transformer was made, with the difference that a heating element was used instead of a coil. Convection heat transfer tests were performed at different input powers to the heating element, including 50.5, 75.6, 100, and 124 (W), and for forced convection heat transfer around the system made of two blowers with a power of 33 (W), According to the SEM analysis, the diameter of TiO2 doped MWCNTs varies from 41.25 nm to 64.82 nm, and TiO2 nanoparticles are spherically doped on MWCNTs. The diameter of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles varies from 32.09 nm to 50.53 nm. According to the obtained results, the addition of single and hybrid nanoparticles of TiO2 doped MWCNTs and ZnFe2O4 to the transformer oil has led to an improvement in the oil's properties, so that the maximum increase in the viscosity index of nanofluids with 0.2 wt.% TiO2 doped MWCNTs was equal to 34.86 and the maximum improvement of the natural and forced heat transfer coefficients of nanofluids was 23.05 and 24.68%, respectively. In the natural convection heat transfer, the significant improvement of the Nusselt number for fluids related to the input power of 124 W and the concentration of 0.1 wt.% of TiO2 doped MWCNTs was about 16.54%. By adding ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles, most of the properties of the oil have been improved, so that the maximum improvement in breakdown voltage of nanofluid with 0.1 wt.% of ZnFe2O4 was equal to 17.3 percent. By adding 0.1 wt.% of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles, the free movement heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids was improved to its maximum extent by 14.15%. The use of TiO2 doped MWCNTs has had to a reduction in the breakdown voltage of the oil. As a hybrid nanoparticle in transformer oil, ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and TiO2 doped MWCNTs were used to prevent further reduction and maintain the breakdown voltage in the standard range. These hybrid nanofluids improved the thermal properties of transformer oil, and the breakdown voltage values of these nanofluids were close to the breakdown voltage of transformer oil.
