Recently, many efforts have been made to replace semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with carbon dots (CDs) due to their low toxicity, environmental friendliness, simple and inexpensive synthetic route, and chemical inertness. Despite the unique properties of CDs, the low quantum yields and few functional groups on CDs not only limit their binding to biomolecules but also reduce their application in various fields. The recent studies on the photoluminescence mechanism of CDs show that surface functionalization and chemical doping (with non-metallic atoms and metal ions) are two efficient routes to improve the photoluminescence performance and expand the application scope of CDs in different fields. Particularly, metal-doped carbon dots have received great interest among researchers in virtue of their exceptional optical properties. Although in recent years, researchers have synthesized and studied CDs doped with various metal ions such as Zn, Cu, Co, Fe, Eu, Gd, Pd, etc, but their behavior has not been still entirely studied in various processes as well as their application in the analytical field. In the present research, it is attempted to dope various metal ions (including Cu, Co, Ni, etc.) into the matrix of CDs to prepare luminescence probes to determine some organic and inorganic compounds. In the first part, CDs doped with copper and nitrogen (Cu,N-CDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and their catalytic effect on the luminol-NaIO4 CL system was investigated. It was observed that Cu, N-CDs caused a remarkable increase in the CL signal of the system. Further studies showed that the CL signal decreased linearly by increasing the concentration of 4-nitrophenol. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range and detection limit of the method were obtained 0.25-150 nM and 0.06 nM, respectively. This method was successfully applied for the determination of 4-nitrophenol in environmental samples. In the second part of the research, CDs doped with nitrogen and cobalt (Co,N-CDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and their effect on the H2O2-NaIO4 CL system in an alkaline medium was investigated. It was observed that Co,N-CDs caused a remarkable increase in the CL signal of the relevant system. Further studies showed that the CL signal decreased linearly by increasing the concentration of 3-nitrotyrosine. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range and detection limit of the method were obtained 5-300 nM and 1.5 nM, respectively. This method was applied for the determination of 3-nitrotyrosine in biological samples. In the third section, CDs doped with nitrogen, platinum, and palladium (Pt,Pd,N-CDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and their catalytic effect on the CH3CN-H2O2 CL system in an alkaline medium was investigated. It was observed that Pt,Pd,N-CDs caused a remarkable increase in the CL signal of this system. Further studies showed that the CL signal increased linearly by increasing the concentration of iron (II). Accordingly, a new sensor was designed for the determination of iron (II) in the range of 0.002-20 µM with a detection limit of 0.5 nM. Finally, this method was successfully used for the determination of iron (II) in environmental samples. In the last section, a magnetic fluorimetric sensor for the determination of fenitrothion was prepared based on the encapsulation of CDs doped with nitrogen and nickel (Ni,N-CDs) and iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) into the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The prepared nanosensor combined the advantages of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (magnetic separation and enriching the target analytes) and ZIF-8 (excellent adsorption capability) with high sensitivity of Ni,N-CDs. Therefore, magnetic ZIF-8 nanocrystals were used as ideal absorbents to enrich fenitrothion and Ni,N-CDs were exploited as optical materials to produce stable and strong fluorescence signals. It was observed that the fluorescence signal of the MOF-based nanocomposite (with excitation/emission maxima at 340/450 nm) was quenched remarkably with the addition of fenitrothion. Accordingly, a novel sensor was designed for the determination of fenitrothion in the range of 0.9-120 nM with a detection limit of 0.8 nM. Finally, this method was successfully used for the determination of fenitrothion in water and fruit juice samples
