At present, study of water quality is a major concern of scientists in the field of water and environment, since it overshadows the life of all organisms and ultimately humans. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are single-celled algae that live in a variety of moist substrates, including rocks and sediments along rivers, wet soil, sludge, plant trunk, and even animal bodies. Diatoms are a good indicator for studying water quality due to their siliceous wall, special decorations on the shells, and wide tolerance range against environmental factors. Although ecosystem diversity is very high in Iran, however, this field has not been studied much. In this study, in order to investigate the impact of environmental factors on the waters of Marand region based on diatom flora, samples were taken from seven different stations around the city of Marand. Four stations in the southern part of the city, whose waters originate from the Mishu mountains, and three other stations in the north of Marand, which originate from the Zanuz and Samburan mountains. Sampling was performed in autumn and winter of 2020 and spring and summer of 2021. Samples were taken from riverbed sediments and populations on rocks. The crude samples were then thoroughly boiled with hydrogen peroxide 37% and hydrochloric acid 37% to remove the internal diatomaceous compounds and the organic and mineral matter in the solution, and to stabilize only the cleaned silica wall for studies. A total of 148 species were isolated from the seven stations studied in four seasons (it should be noted that the beginning of study on Zanuz station was in winter). Accurate identification was performed using reliable references on diatoms. These specimens fall into 34 genera, 18 families. The Nitzschia genus from the family Bacillariacea and the Navicula genus from the family Naviculacea were the most diverse genera in the region. Comparison of the obtained species diversity versus other studies shows there are some species resistant to contaminated, saline, acidic and alkaline waters. Some species are specific to mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. Some species are more abundant in waters contaminated with heavy metals. Pollution in water reduces the size of diatoms. In areas where the water is clean, there is a great variety of diatoms and the size of the diatoms are larger. EC decreases in all stations with increasing temperature in spring and summer. The water that originate from the Mishu Mountains has a very good quality compared to the waters that originate from the Zanuz and Samburan Mountains, which are messed up by pollution gushing out of a kaolin washing plant.
