In this study, the removal of reactive red 43 (RR43), as a model pollutant, as well as a number of organic dyes from synthetic and real wastewaters by electrochemical coagulation/flocculation process was investigated using iron (ECF-Fe) and aluminum (ECF-Al) anodes. The experiments were carried out in a monopolar batch and continuous reactor using two anodes and two steel cathodes in parallel connections. Firstly, the effect of type and concentration of anion, current density, initial pH and type of dye on the ECF-Fe and ECF-Al performance in the removal of RR43 were investigated. The obtained results from evaluating the influence of some anions including chloride, sulfate and nitrate on the removal of RR43 using ECF-Al revealed that higher removal efficiency was obtained in the presence of chloride ions. Sulfate ions inhibit the release of Al3+ from the anode while in the existences of chloride and nitrate current efficiency was higher than 100 . Dye removal efficiency was considerably decreased by increasing the anion concentration and adding sulfate and nitrate to the solution containing chloride. In ECF using iron anodes, the higher removal efficiency was achieved in the presence of chloride and sulfate ions. Potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed that the passive layer formation on the iron surface in the solution containing nitrate caused a considerable decrease in the current and removal efficiency. This passive layer was destroyed by adding chloride ions and in this condition, the removal efficiency and quantity of Fe2+ ions increased remarkably. Also, the effects of current density and pH on the efficiency of the ECF-Fe and ECF-Al processes were studied. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained in relatively acidic medium (pH=4.25) in the first 12 minutes of ECF-Al. In neutral media, there is no considerable enhancement in removal efficiency by applying current densities higher than 15 A/m2. While, in ECF-Fe, a significant lag time between the starting of the process and initiation of considerable dye removal was observed. The removal rate of RR43 increased with enhancing the current density. In the similar operational conditions, the removal of basic dyes was not considerable by ECF-Al. However, the removal efficiency of anionic dyes was improved with the addition of the number of sulfonate substituted groups in dye structure. The maximum removal efficiency of all cationic and anionic dyes (RE>90 ) was achieved using EC-Fe. The enmeshment of dyes on iron oxide/hydroxide precipitates and charge neutralization were the main removal mechanisms in EC-Fe and EC-Al processes, respectively.Optimization and modeling of ECF-Fe and ECF-Al processes were carried out by RSM for both EC-Fe and EC-Al processes. The analysis of variance revealed that developed models RSM could predict the removal efficiency of RR43 in both processes. The optimum conditions proposed by RSM for maximum removal efficiency were different for both processes. At the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of dye was more than 99 , while 91.03 and 98.22 of initial total organic carbon (TOC) concentration decreased during EC-Fe and EC-Al processes, respectively. The results of UV/Vis, TOC and GC-MS analysis verified the remaining some organics in the treated solution by EC-Fe process. According to the organic by-products identified by GC-MS, the degradation of the dye by EC-Fe process was possible as a minor pathwayThe performance of ECF-Fe and ECF-Al processes was successfully predicted by applying a three-layer neural network (using a backpropagation algorithm) with four, twelve and one neurons in input, hidden and output layers, respectively. The ECF-Fe process was more effective than ECF-Al in the decolorization of the real wastewater. For the continuous ECF reactor, the calculated mean residence time was equal to 18.27 min. The complete decolorization with continuous ECF reactor will be achieved when the current density to flow rate ratio was higher than 0.8.
