Increasing developments in societies and the accelerating demands for energy and fast communication in one hand and on the other hand facing with some obstructs like dense civic facilities and wide rivers make's it inevitable to use some underground wanes. In order to perform it tunnelling industry has relied on the recent method of tunneling which named EPBM. In this method excavated soil has placed in the chamber which restricted between the face of the ground and the constructed lining. By means of that the machine is able to insert the deleted pressure to the ground. But the soil in order to act in this way must be conditioned in a way such as possessing some of properties like high compressibility , low shear strength for making excavation possible and controlled permeability in excavations under the water table. This is soil conditioning.Facing with such ideal soil masses which contain all appropriate properties seems to be impossible or rare. As a result some of strategies must become in to use to condition the soil by preparing the appropriate properties for excavated soil masses. Recently using foams in order to present this matter has been received a great attention. Foams have two remarkable effects. Firstly they can add water gradually and in controlled manner in to the soil mass and secondly can give a plastic nature for soil mass by having different effects on different soil masses as gathering or dispersing soil particles. This research has tried to study some properties of soils as shear strength, compressibility and permeability. The soil samples which used in this research has prepared from the route of tunnels of Tabriz urban railway. But because of extending the research to all varieties of the available soils in line, constant mass of fine aggregates has added to the soil mass in four stages. The performed tests in this project are consisted of Direct shear tests on soil masses by means of conventional shear box apparatus and the large shear box. Tests has been performed in three or four different stress levels and the results for large and conventional shear boxes has been evaluated in two differing circumstances as fine aggregate masses and added foam quantity. Tests on evaluating the compressibility of the soil mass has been done restrictedly but the results presented different parameters order. Permeability is another variable that has been studied practically for conditioned soils purposes. Results demonstrate a short reduction in shear strength of the soil samples which is obviously different from what has stated with some prior studies. But addition of not great amount of fine aggregate in to the samples causes greater losses in shear strength parameters. Higher amounts of added foam shows no changes in this trend but bringing it lower causes some reductions in the losses of shear parameters.Compressibility similar to the shear parameters becomes wealthy by addition of fines. Also resulted from the research that in foamed soils the time it takes to start steady flow state through the sample tends to be longer in comparison to the soils which has not foamed. But after beginning of the steady state there is no difference in amount of the passed flow.
