Consumption is a stable component of GDP and estimating the marginal propensity to consume (MPC) is important in economic policy. The present study mainly aims at testing the Dosenberys ratchet effect hypothesis in Iran during the years 1978-2017. To this aim, the model is estimated using the ARDL technique. Experimental findings show that Dosenberys ratchet effect hypothesis cannot be rejected in Iran. Based on the results, the long-term marginal propensity to consume is more than the short-term marginal propensity to consume. Therefore, the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies in the long-term is greater than that of the short-term. Experimental findings also show that real interest rates have a significant negative effect on consumption
