Potassium is the third macronutrient provided in a complete fertilizer. Exhaustive cropping of potassium-demanding crops like potato, sunflower and sugar beet leads to depletion of soil non-exchangeable potassium and subsequent fixation of added potassium. In this study the effects of different factors (K source, K concentration, different soil water suctions and the number of wetting-drying cycles) as well as kinetics of potassium fixation were investigated in some potassium-depleted soils of Azarbayjan. For this purpose 6 soil samples were selected from among 17 locations where the amounts of boiling nitric acid extractable-K were considerably lower in cultivated soils as compared with the adjacent non-cultivated soils. Results showed that after two days of incubation the amounts of K fixation from the source of KCl (34.4 ) were significantly (P<0.001) higher than the source of K2SO4(24.8 ).Furthermore, the amounts of K fixation after air-drying of the soils were significantly(P<0.001) increased(13.8 ).There was a significant (P<0.01) positive relationship between the amount of K fixation and clay content. Three soil samples with different amounts of K fixation were chosen from among six soil samples for subsequent studies. Kinetics of K fixation from the source of KCl at constant FC (33 kPa) showed three phases of changes (increase, decrease and re-increase).However, with the source of K2SO4 the final phase was more or less steady-state. Early air-drying of the soils was significantly (P<0.01) caused more K fixation in comparison with middle and late air-drying. According to the results obtained the effects of K concentration, soil water suction and their interaction on K fixation were significant (P<0.001).The highest amount of K fixation was occurred in 100 kPa soil water suction. Furthermore, K fixation was significantly (P<0.001) elevated with increase in the number of wetting-drying cycles. Determination of the amount of K fixation in calcareous soils by the method of CEC-hysteresis was impossible because of the ability of sodium acetate to extract non-exchangeableK.
