Low temperature combustion (LTC) is an emerging engine technology that has ability to yield low NOx and soot emissions while maintaining high fuel efficiency. LTC strategy includes various combustion models such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) and reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI). These LTC strategies use early fuel injections to allow sufficient time for air/fuel mixing before combustion. RCCI is a dual-fuel combustion which uses port fuel injection (PFI) of a low reactivity fuel (e.g., gasoline, natural gas and alcohol fuels) and indirect direct injection (IDI) of a high reactivity fuel (e.g., diesel and biodiesel) blending inside the combustion chamber to increase the combustion duration and to provide phasing control. Using reactivity controlled compression ignition strategies brings about such advantages as higher efficiencies, lean burn combustion ability and as a result better fuel economy and also lower emission levels. In the present study, a new strategy is suggested to extend the operating range of these engine types, especially when working at low load condition. This novel method is to add ozone to air-fuel mixture. By releasing active oxygen atom, ozone makes the mixture more reactive and advances the start of combustion. Hence, the engine would have proper auto-ignition and operation and so its operating limits would be extended to use very lean mixtures. In the present work, an experimental and numerical investigation is carried out to explore the effects of ozone on the energy and exergy fractions in a single-cylinder light-duty Ricardo E/6 RCCI engine. Natural gas with low reactivity is inducted into the engine through the intake port, while diesel fuel with high reactivity is directly injected into the engine using a single injection strategy. Measurements are conducted for ozone additions of 0, 50, 100, 200, 250, 300 and 400 ppm, constant CNG to diesel energy ratio of 4, and the lambda number of 3.5. The results suggest that the increased seeded ozone augments energy and exergy efficiency. The resultant experimental outcome also unveiled a significant load extension of RCCI engine operation using ozone-based additive. Furthermore, it was observed that the ozone usage holds promise for the emissions reduction of CO and HC although at the expense of the increased NO_x emissions
