Austenitic stainless steels 304 and stainless ferritic 430 due to their good mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance have wide applications in construction of tanks, auto parts, kitchen utensils, plants and air industries. Dissimilar joining of these two steel in different industries is very important. Due to changes in the microstructure of steel and other problems caused by fusion welding methods, the solid state welding method of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) was used to join these steels. In this thesis, friction stir spot welding of 304 to 430 stainless steels has been investigated. In this research, three parameters of tool rotational speed, penetration depth and final stopping time were selected as process variables. After determining the range of these parameters, three levels were selected for each of the variables. In order to determine the optimal welding conditions and check the effect of welding parameters, 27 experimental tests were conducted in a full factorial manner. By examining the results, fine cracks were observed in the welding nugget at the minimum rotational speed (900 rpm) due to insufficient heat and lack of proper mixing of the two materials and at the maximum rotational speed (1400 rpm) due to excessive heat. and by increasing the duration of the final stop of the tool inside the weld to its maximum value (35 seconds), we saw an increase in the policing around the weld nugget. According to the weld appearance and tensile test results, the input parameters of rotational speed of 1125 rpm, penetration depth of 2.7 mm and final stop time of 5 seconds were obtained as optimal conditions, and under these conditions, tensile strength equal to 6343 newtons was obtained. In optimal conditions, microstructural studies and thermomechanical developments were carried out using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope equipped with X-ray energy diffraction spectroscopy and backscattering electron diffraction, and finally, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and microhardness testing were performed. The optical microscope images showed the fine grain structure in the Thermo mechanically affected zone and stir zone and coarse grain structure in the heat affected zone after the process, and this decrease in grain size in the TMAZ and SZ areas for 304 steel was 55% and 70%, respectively. In 430 steel, a 46% increase in the HAZ and a 65% decrease in the grain size compared to the base material were observed in the SZ. The EBSD results showed that there is about 10% mixing of austenite phase in the ferrite background phase in the joint of two metals. Due to the increase of 72% (austenitic steel) and 57% (ferritic steel) in the distribution of low-angle grain boundaries in the stir zone compared to the base material, dynamic recrystallization has occurred in this zone for both steels and in the TMAZ for the alloy. Due to the increase of low-angle grain boundaries, dynamic recovery is dominant in ferrite, but in the TMAZ, for austenitic alloy, due to the decrease of low-angle grain boundaries, dynamic recovery is less likely. According to the qualitative images of the EBSD results, discontinuous dynamic recrystallization did not occur in the TMAZ and SZ of 304 steel, but in the SZ of ferritic steel and the joint of the two materials, discontinuous dynamic recrystallization occurred due to the presence of dark colored regions. The XRD results show the existence of two phases of ferrite and austenite in the joint zone. The Vickers microhardness distribution diagram also shows the increase in hardness in TMAZ and SZ areas, which is 16% and 28% for austenitic steel in TMAZ and SZ, and 101% and 46% for ferritic steel, respectively. Finite element modeling was used to measure temperature and strain rate. According to the finite element modeling output, the maximum temperature is 1219 o C, the maximum strain value is 6.5 and the strain rate is 7.14 s-1.
