In steels, with the increase in the percentage of carbon and alloying elements, the starting and ending temperature of martensitic and bainite transformation decreases. Therefore, in high-alloy and high-carbon steels, the end temperature of such transformations is reduced to lower temperature values. In this category of steels, some austenite will remain in the structure after quenching and tempering heat treatment. This structure, which is soft, reduces hardness and wear resistance and dimensional instability. Therefore, one of the important issues in the heat treatment of this category of steels is the reduction or removal of residual austenite. One of the methods used to reduce the amount of residual austenite is the use of subzero heat treatment. In this research, the effect of subzero operation along with various heat treatments on the mechanical properties and microstructure of bainite steel was evaluated. In order to study the microstructure properties of the samples, scanning electron microscope imaging was used. Microstructural results showed that in case of subzero operation, the steel structure has tempered martensite and residual austenite. The remaining austenite in the structure was observed as film austenite and packed austenite. The results of imaging the microstructure of the samples showed that due to the tempering of the samples after subzero operation, very small carbides are scattered in the structure of the samples, and these carbides led to the improvement of the mechanical properties of the samples. In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of the samples, tensile, hardness and impact tests were used. The results of the tensile and hardness test showed that the hardness of the samples improved by 41%, the yield strength by 115% and the tensile strength by 40%. By increasing the tempering temperature after sub-zero operation, from 200°C to 400°C, the mechanical properties of the samples were weakened by 28%. The results of the impact test showed that the samples of cycles 400-4-400-2 , 300-10-300-2 , 300-16-200-2 have the highest absorbed energy and the highest toughness compared to other samples. This was despite the fact that the samples of cycles 4 and 7, which did not perform sub-zero operations, have the lowest impact energy.
