From past to present, medical imaging has been evolving and innovating as an effective way to study the anatomy and physiology of the body. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive method for high-resolution imaging of internal tissues, especially the brain. Quantitative analysis of these images is necessary to diagnose many diseases and neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The use of image segmentation, which means dividing different anatomical components and structures into a specific set of classes, is widely used to diagnose and monitor MS patients. But the manual segmentation of lesions by specialists is a very cumbersome, time-consuming and subjective task and is prone to human error; So, having automated segmentation algorithms is very useful for this. Also, the presence of artifacts such as tissue intensity distribution overlap, bias field, noise, partial volume effects, etc. affect the performance of intensity-dependent segmentation algorithms and is a major obstacle to achieving accurate results. In this thesis, we first investigated a number of segmentation algorithms based on the Gaussian mixture model and then, the FGMMB algorithm was used as the first proposed model for MS lesions segmentation. However, due to the fact that this algorithm is dependent on initialization, in order to increase the accuracy of segmentation, in the second proposed model for optimizing the initial values of cluster centers and bias field in FGMMB, an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is used. It uses the strategy of Linear Exponential Learning Factors (LELF) and Exponent Decreasing inertia Weight (EDW) to Update the learning factors and the inertia weight, respectively. Performance of the algorithms was evaluated using two databases including MR simulated images of healthy brains and real MR images with MS lesions. Comparison of the results of the algorithms and manual segmentation indicate the good performance of the FGMMB + IPSO algorithm compared to other methods, so that the values of 99.34 , 86.94 , 77.39 and 99.52 were obtained for ACC, DSC, JI and SPE in MS lesion segmentation, respectively; Finally, applying a post-processing step improved the results.
