Space structures are the best solution for covering large areas without intermediate supports. The most significant feature of these structures is their potential for mass production, light weight as well as being economic. Despite these valuable advantages, space structures are vulnerable to progressive collapse. Progressive collapse mostly commence due to instability occurring and then extends to the entire structure. The most important factor in progressive collapse of multi-layer space structures is buckling of compression members. Force limiting devices are applied to critical compression members in order to alter the brittle post-buckling behavior of compressive members into the elastic-perfect plastic behavior. In the present study, taking advantage of BRB and accordion damper design principles, a new type of FLD is introduced. Three all steel Accordion Force Limiting Device (AFLD) specimens were designed and manufactured and tested under uniaxial compression load. Then parametric study was carried out in order to investigate in to the effects of some important AFLD parameters on the behavior of AFLD. Numerical results suggest that core material has a significant effect on the behavior of AFLDs. By decreasing the inner diameter of core, the value of ultimate load carrying capacity decreases. A procedure for predicting AFLD's axial force-axial displacement behavior was presented. In order to investigate AFLDs effect on the stability behavior of double layer barrel vaults, three finite element models with variable height to span ratios were designed and developed. Nonlinear static collapse analysis was carried out on the models to identify the collapse mechanism and position of the group of critical members. In the next step, critical members are equipped with AFLDs to prevent occurrence of progressive collapse. Results indicate that applying AFLDs improves the load carrying capacity of space structures and provides alternate paths to prevent the occurrence of progressive collapse
