In recent years, Low temperature Nanostructured Bainite steels (NLBS), have been developed with unique characteristics. Contrary to other Nanostructured materials, processing this type of steel is available with a simple heat treating cycle and relatively low cost. In this type of steel, high carbon steels are used to increase the efficiency of structure refinement process but high percentage of carbon content results in increasing of unstable retained Austenite which results in decrease in toughness of bainite microstructure and limitation in resultant bainite volume in a given temperature. Consequently, research about production methods and availability of nanostructure bainite steels in low-carbon steels seems necessary. In this paper the effect of a continuous heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of a low carbon alloy has been studied. Chemical composition of the steel has been selected and designed based on thermodynamic models. In order to produce the parts, the ingot was first cast the processed using ESR process. Then, in the induction furnace under the protection of argon gas, homogenization under vacuum atmosphere was carried out. Finally the pieces were subjected to hot rolling. Subsequently, heat treatment samples were subjected to continuous heat cycles after austenitization. The resulting structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy and hardness, impact and tensile tests. The results of tensile test showed that continuous cooling rate reduction has an optimum limit for increasing toughness and elongation of samples. Also, the fractography using scanning electron microscopy showed that at relatively high temperatures, with the deceleration rate of the break mechanism, the mechanism failure changed from pseudo-clavage and fine dimples to clavage plates, but in low temperatures, reducing the cooling rate didnt result in brittle and semi brittle failures.
