Nowadays, with the help of structural health monitoring )SHM( methods, it is possible to identify the occurrence of damage at the very early stages and prevent fatality and financial damages. Great advances in sensor technology have led to dynamic non-destructive methods in SHM. The purpose of this study is to provide a low-cost damage detection method for structures using signal processing and neural network techniques. For a reliable decision in damage detection, raw response signals from structures should be processed by signal processing methods initially. Iran has one of the world largest gas and oil reserves, so offshore platforms have a vital role in exploiting these fields among country s infrastructures and their proper operation is of great importance. In this research, as a case study, the damage detection of a jacket platform which is built in ABAQUS software is proposed so all data sets are achieved by numerical modeling. It is worth mentioning that the scaled platform is built in Khajeh Nasir university of technology laboratory and it is inspired by one of the Persian Gulf s platforms. Here, the aim is to access methods for considering damage probability occurrence, its localization and severity. So at first, acceleration responses of the offshore jacket platform are processed by empirical mode decomposition )EMD( and discrete wavelet transform )DWT(. Then, a combination of neural network and signal processing is proposed. In this method, a multilayer perceptron neural network is trained by the signals obtained from EMD and DWT for three different conditions of the jacket platform to determine the damage occurrence probability. In this procedure, it is found that DWT outperforms EMD in damage detection due to better noise reduction. Also, the envelope of the obtained signals energy )ENV( from EMD and DWT is used to determine the damage location. Finally, by the use of some distance-based methods such as Manhattan distance, normalized residual energy )NRE( and maximum amplitude)MA( of EMD and DWT coefficients, the severity of damage is computed and through SVM labels the new scenarios are classified correctly. Evaluations in this thesis show that both signal processing methods )EMD and DWT( are able to identify damage in the structure for different damage scenarios, given the fact that wavelet can be more accurate in damage localization. Neural networks are also efficient in assessing the presence and severity of damage. It is worth mentioning that the way of using these signal processing and artificial intelligence methods for offshore platforms is proposed for the first time.
