This paper documents the history and conservation of the official flag of the Protestant Episcopal Church c. 1940. The flag is now kept in the archives of The George Mercer, Jr. Memorial School of Theology on the grounds of The Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, NY. The paper describes the motivation for and process in designing and adopting the flag which represents the Protestant Episcopal Church. The flag design reflects links to the Church of England and the Church of Scotland bringing these elements together to define an American identity within the Anglican Communion. The flag served as a prototype for the flag flown outside of Episcopal Churches nationwide and its design influenced the shield and seal design for the office of Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
