The Turkish general Kenan Evren (1917-2015) was a former chief of the general staff who led the coup d'état of 12 September 1980, becoming head of state until November 1982, when he was elected president of the Republic, serving until November 1989. In June 2014, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his part in the 1980 coup, but died in May 2015, before the legal appeal process had been completed. Kenan Evren was born in July 1917, in the town of Alaşehir, both his parents being immigrants
