Shihāb al-Dīn Ibn Bahāʾ al-Dīn b. Subḥān al-Marjānī al-Ḥanafī al-Bulghārī al-Qazānī (1818-89) was the most important Islamic scholar and religious leader of the Volga-Ural region of Russia [Illustration 1]. Born in the village of Yapançı (Russ., Epanchino), near Kazan in present-day Tatarstan, al-Marjānī hailed from a scholarly family of repute-his father and grandfather were both learned ʿulamāʾ (religious scholars)-and he was educated locally before travelling in 1838 to Central Asia to continue his studies.
