The current state of biotechnology is visualized very effectively. The present volume reports on an American-Japanese meeting held in Moryama, Japan. The well prepared and efficiently organized event covered the major aspects of bioprocess engineering including animal and plant cell culture, biocatalysts, downstream processing, sensoring and bioprocess control, as well as genetic engineering. The broad spectrum indicates strengths and weaknesses of current efforts being made for the improvement of process technology and the search for new products. The contributions collected in this volume have been drafted carefully by the authors since the meeting took place. Thanks to the critical editorial work of Professor Okada from Osaka University and Professor Tanner from Vanderbilt University a most interesting picture of the present day status of bioprocess engineering is made available.
