The current state of biotechnology is visualized very effectively in this volume, which reports on an American- Japanese meeting held in Honolulu, Hawaii. This well prepared and efficiently organized event covered all major aspects of bioprocess engineering. The broad spectrum indicates strengths and weaknesses of current efforts being made for the improvement of technology and the search for new products. The contributions in this volume have been carefully rewritten by the authors since the meeting took place. Thanks to the critical editorial work of Professor Yoshida from Osaka University and Professor Tanner from Vanderbilt University a most interesting picture of the present day status of bio-process engineering is made available.
