D) were engaged in discovery tasks by means of movie retelling. Every five sessions their performances, that is, participants A and B on an IELTS speaking prompt and C and D on a ten minute movie retelling task, were recorded and analyzed in terms of fluency and gambit use. Pearsons correlation indicated a very high correlation between gambit use and fluency and that engaging learners in discovery tasks yielded the best results towards improving oral fluency. These findings suggest that more gambit use on the learners part leads to higher fluency in performance. It can also be concluded that engaging learners in discovery tasks leads to more gambit discovery and in turn higher oral fluency. It is hoped that due to the findings of this study teachers will reconsider the role of gambits and appreciate its value and that learners can benefit from the study for the sake of becoming more independent and effective learners. This independency can then enable them to rely on their own language resources in performing tasks, thus resulting in a more effective communication in everyday life& B) observed teacher modeling while the other two (C & D) which were under observation for approximately two years were investigated.
