This study investigated the effect of prelistening activities on the listening performance offoreign language learners. The researcher in this study wanted to know the effect of these activities on listening performance of learners with different proficiency levels, i.e. elementary, intermediate, and advance learners. So 96 male participants were chosen. First, they were accommodated into three different proficiency groups according to a placement test. There were 30 students in elementary level, 36 students in intermediate level and 30 students in advanced level. Then, participants of each level were divided into two groups. Randomly one of them was called control group and the other as experimental group. First of all, a pretest was given to all of the control and experimental groups within each level in order to ensure that they are nearly the same at the beginning of study. In this phase the researcher used t-test and found that groups within each level were nearly the same in respect to their listening abilities. Then, in eight sessions both control and experimental groups were taught. Control groups received no treatment, whereas experimental groups received prelistening activities as the treatment. The present study wanted to know the effect of independent variables (activating studentsب background knowledge about the forthcoming materials, presenting vocabularies, and asking general questions) on dependent variable (listening comprehension). After eight sessions, mean scores of control and experimental groups of each level were compared with each other by using t-test. Also the researcher used ANOVA in order to find the effect of these prelistening act ivities between three levels. According to t-test, only advanced level learners could improve their listening performance by the help of prelistening activities. It is expected that the findings of this study could shed some light on the process of learning foreign language especially listening classes..
