.equation and the suggested root uptake model was calibrated and validated using the observed data.In this study, also two water flow models including the proposed model (SWMRUM)and HYDRUS software were compared based on the field measurement in an apple orchard. This comparison showed an acceptable correlation between the simulated and measured water contents. In average, the root mean square error (RMSE) values were calculated ۰.۰۲۶ for the HYDRUS model and ۰.۰۱۴ for the SWMRUM model. In other words, application of the new root distribution and stress functions gave more accurate results under field conditions. The results showed that maximum root water uptake was ۰.۰۴ m۳m-۳d-۱ at depth ۲۵-۳۰ cm and its minimum was ۰.۰۰۵ m۳m-۳d-۱ at depth ۸۰ cm بWater flow and root water uptake are not separated phenomena and accurate prediction of them can be important in improving the plant efficiency. Soil water movement based on root water uptake is the key of water and chemicals transport in the soil-plant system. Understanding of water flow through soils and root uptake with solutions of the governing equations is of specific importance in water engineering that can play an important role in irrigation management. In this research the governing equation of water flow was solved based on the finite difference technique using the weighted four-point implicit method. Field measurements were done for calibration and validation of the model and a new root water uptake modelwas developed based on the field studies. To do this, values of soil volumetric water content were measured around an apple tree at ۱۲ locations from the soil surface to ۲ m in depth. In this model, the newly proposed parameters of root distribution and water stress functions were used that had not been used previously by others. One of these new parameters is the soil mechanical strength that in the proposed model was considered as an index for root growth ability. The coupled model resulting from Richards
