Potato is an important, strategic and nutritionally valuable plant which is cultivated in 140 countries with production area of 18 million hectares. In terms of production and consumption, after wheat, corn, rice and barley, potato has the fifth grade in the world. Tomato is also the second valuable vegetable economically, and in terms of consumption is placed after potato in Iran. Early blight is one of the most destructive fungal disease of the plants belong to solanaceae and causes leaf spot, wound, rot in the fruit, stem, collar, and ultimately reduction in the yield. Alternaria species are the causal agents of this disease. Early blight in Iran, is prevalent in almost all producing areas of potato and tomato. In East Azarbaijan province, 10-15 of potato crop is destroyed by disease annually. According to the studies carried out in different producing areas of tomato in Iran, A.solani, A.alternata, A.tenuissima, A.tomatophila and A.arborescens species are involved in the disease occurence. Also A.solani and A.alternata has been reported as the causal agents of early blight on potato. This research was conducted with the objectives of study on distribution, incidence and severity of disease, identification of Alternaria species causing the early blight of potato and tomato in Bostan Abad and Tabriz cities and evaluation the reaction of several tomato varieties against them. During crop season 2017, infected potato fields in Tabriz (including Basmenj, Hervi, Sardrood, Laleh,...) and Bostan Abad city (including Bostan Abad, Tikmeh dash, Kurd kandy, Duzduzan and ...) and also tomato fields in Tabriz city (including Laleh, Sardrood, Tabriz and Basmenj, were surveyed at four growing steps (stem elongation, before flowering, flowering and after flowering). Samples from leaves, stems and fruits with disease symptoms were collected from each field, transferred to laboratory and after surface disinfection, cultured on different media. Fungal isolates were identified based on macroscopic and microscopic characteristics and by help of valid descriptive keys. This research was followed by evaluation the reaction of seven tomato varieties including Walter, Super Stone, Petopride 5, King Star, Monalisa, Super Chef and Falat agains A. tenuissima isolated from tomato fields in Tabriz city. In field surveys, symtoms such as leaf spot, stem canker, and spot on fruit were observed in potato and tomato fields. Distribution of early blight disease was observed in all potato and tomato producing areas in Tabriz and Bostan Abad cities and in 100 of surveyed fields. Average of disease incidence at final plant growth stage, in potato fields of Bostan Abad and Tabriz was 92.5 and 94.3 respectively and in tomato fields of Tabriz was 99.3 . Average of disease severity in the mentioned areas was also 60, 58 and 61 respectively.
