The Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument- 2nd edition (MAYSI-2), is a self-report measure used to assess the mental health needs of juvenile offenders in 48 states within the Unites States of America. Within the state of Illinois, there juvenile prisons noticed that the youth reported significant elevations within the Somatic Complaints scale. This dissertation will address whether somatic complaints are indicative of physiological symptoms or psychological issues, or both in the youth. By analyzing the Somatic Complaints subscale within the MAYSI-2 through bivariate correlations, clinicians will know if they should pay closer attention to endorsements of somatic complaints in this self-report measure. Results of this dissertation indicate that endorsements of somatic complaints within the warning range for African American youth in the MAYSI-2, are directly correlated with Anger, Irritability, Depression, Anxiety, and Alcohol/Drug Use. In addition, these scores are also reflective of medical histories and psychological diagnoses.
