Inner city and urban schools tend to have higher rates of behavioral problems in classrooms, typically behaviors often found in children with Conduct Disorder (CD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Keenan, & Wakschlag; Tolan, & Henry, 1996). In an attempt to improve student success, Teacher Child Interaction Training (TCIT), a school-directed adaptation of Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), was designed to minimize these negative behaviors by teaching educators positive behavior management techniques for use in the classroom (Zisser & Eyberg, 2010). TCIT has had a history of success with children from a range of racial/ethnicity groups (Lyon, Gershenson, Farahmand, Thaxter, Behling, & Budd, 2009). The intervention has also consistently shown success with early childhood classrooms but has only recently begun to be used for elementary and older students (Budd, Gerard, Ray, Tadros, & Donnelly, 2017). Like PCIT, the full TCIT intervention consists of two phases, a relationship-enhancement phase and a discipline phase (McIntosh, Rizza & Bliss, 2000). Some studies suggest that phase 1 of the PCIT/TCIT interventions produce significant reductions in child disruptive behavior (Tiano, 2010). The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of TCIT phase 1 implementation on externalizing behaviors of at-risk students in an urban elementary school.
