This dissertation aims to place the book of Daniel (especially chapters 1-6) against the background of story-collections. It compares Daniel 1-6 to an explicit definition of the story-collection genre and to specific bodies of story-collections and related material in the ancient Near East. Such an attempt seems appropriate in light of the recent work of scholars of fourteenth-century European literature who have developed an explicit typology for the "story-collection" genre. Daniel 1-6 possesses certain overt features in common with this genre: six discrete episodic tales belonging together by reason of their connection to the figure Daniel, common setting and themes; the compilation and probable circulation of these tales together as an independent collection before being connected to the visions of chapters 7-12; and various elements of structure and arrangement, such as a prologue and narrative links, and an open-endedness in the number and arrangement of those stories. When Daniel is set against an explicit definition of the story-collection, it affects our conception of text critical aspects, of the history of composition, and of the overall nature of the book. The divergent texts (MT/usd\theta\sp\primeusd and OG) of the narrative parts of Daniel are to be described as variant editions, or tellings, of common core material, rather than as translations of older written texts with clearly demonstrable genealogies or relationships. The history of composition, and development of these stories and their texts, just as with those of most recognized story-collections, remain complex by reason of their closeness to orality and their popular nature. When Daniel is set against the context of story-collections and related material from the surrounding ancient Near Eastern literatures, some of the literary traditions and literary processes from which the Daniel stories arose are clarified. The ancient Near Eastern wise courtier or magician stories, especially from Egypt, contain parallel themes and motifs to Daniel which had previously not been examined--for instance, an emphasis on marvelous deeds and the forecasting of the future.
