A partial translation of 'Ayn al-Vaqayi' (Wellspring of Events), the third of twelve works in Bahr al-Fava'id: Kuliyat-i Riyazi (Unlimited Benefits: The Complete Works of Riyazi) of Muhammad Yusuf. The work was lithographed in Mashhad about 1908 A.D. 'Ayn al-Vaqayi' is one of few accounts written by Durrani Afghans about events in Harat in the nineteenth century, and the only known Farsi work written by a Shi'i Iranian of Durrani ancestry. Muhammad Yusuf, the author, pen-named Riyazi, was the son of a Saduz'i Durrani Afghan who was employed for a time in the court of Harat. The thesis consists of an edited translation of the first 46 pages, from c. 1793 A.D. and the death of Timur Shah, ruler of the Durrani Sultanate, to 1850 A.D. and the end of the revolt of Hasan Khan Salar, Governor General of Qajar Khurasan, with digressions on Payandah Khan, his descendants, and other persons and subjects. A continuation of the translation another 45 pages to c. 1865 A.D. is appended. Descriptions of certain events of coterminous foreign history, which appear in the text, are included in the translation.
