The steady and unsteady ship propeller problem is solved in terms of linearized lifting surface theory both generally and particularly for the case of propeller blades of low aspect ratio. A principal result of this study is that consistent formulas are found for the induced velocity components both within the blade region and in the race. This is a distinct departure from prior work. This analysis subsumes low aspect ratio wing theory. The boundary value problem for blades of small aspect ratio usd(\sim 1.0)usd is reduced to the inversion of a singular integro-differential equation having a Cauchy kernel which facilitates numerical inversion as compared to an existing technique involving a quadratically singular kernel. Results are given for the steady thrust, torque and efficiency of a particular design and compared with predictions by other numerical methods.
