The Niger Delta region of Nigeria maintains significant deposits of natural resources, including crude oil and natural gas, and the region has hosted multinational corporations(MNCs) in the exploration and drilling activities for decades. The general problem was the issue involving oil spills, environmental pollution, and degradation, caused by MNC activities in the Niger Delta area. Specifically, the problem was the insufficient CSR programs and initiatives or the lack thereof to address the issues regarding the loss of the traditional economy, a resulting impact of oil spills, and environmental pollution. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the implications of insufficient CSR programs by multinational corporations (MNCs) on the livelihood of the people living and working in the affected areas of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. The study was achieved with open-ended, semi-structured interviews of 10 participants from the affected areas, focusing on their lived experiences of the phenomenon. NVivo ™ 12 was the preferred qualitative software tool to analyze themes, with validation of data collection and analysis. Study results along with the themes were analyzed in-depth and indicated the severe impact of MNC operations on the livelihood of people in the area. The study findings provided a model that can enable CSR programs to emerge based on the needs of the affected communities. The findings can contribute to the field of management regarding effective leadership models by MNCs in achieving sustainable development through CSR programs that are based on community needs.
