Exodus chapters 19 to 24 contain exegetical and interpretational challenges regarding the intention of the theophany at Mount Sinai and what messages the writer of the events recorded there was conveying. There are two fundamentally different views regarding God's intention for bringing the people to himself and for the theophany at Mount Sinai in these chapters. The first is that "they" obeyed the command given regarding where to go in relation to the mountain and everything went as planned. The other view, shared by a very small minority of scholars, is that the people disobeyed, with the result that Moses was the only one to go up and be "on the mountain." This dissertation argues for the minority view and discusses the profound ramifications the events at Sinai had on the subsequent history of Israel.
