Hausa is the second largest language in the Afroasiatic family of Languages. The Hausa's are the largest ethnic group in Africa with a population numbering over 70 million based primarily in the Sahelian and the savanna areas between Niger and Nigeria. Hausa's are diverse but culturally homogenous with significant indigenized populations in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Ivory coast, Chad, Togo, Ghana, Sudan, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Senegal and Gambia. My major Design Project, The Port Of Cultural exchange, pushes the edges of the terms appropriation, acculturation and assimilation. It interogrates the spatial implications of territory, migration and identity. The Port is particularly interested in the complexities of cultural appropriation , using slippage in translated aspects of Hausa rituals to generate form. It futher draws on their creole, pidgin and parent languages; accents, symbols & adornments, the translations, mistranslations, and the differences between them. My project is a series of spaces across the hausa diaspora in Western Africa. My explorations are currently focused on the first Port of reference ; Port Harcourt , Nigeria. The rituals take place within these spaces as scensory encounters of sight, touch, taste , smell ,and sound : experienced through choreography based on the ritual . And Encompassing 'stills' depicting the Architectural translations of cultural slippage.
