The literature on intimate partner violence indicates that cultures of origin and religion play critical roles in the experience of abuse and in the help-seeking behavior of immigrants. Nigerian immigrants in the diaspora rely heavily on their respective religious leaders in churches and mosques for assistance in dealing with intimate partner violence. But Nigerian religious leaders' effectiveness in helping members of their congregations who have been victims of intimate partner violence is an understudied area. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence Nigerian clergy's response to and effectiveness in helping victims of intimate partner violence in the Nigerian immigrant community in the United States. This mixed methods study examines the experience and effectiveness of 30 Nigerian clergy in Houston, Texas in offering help to immigrants regarding intimate partner violence.
