The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of Saudi Arabian adolescents attending King Abdullah Academy regarding healthy eating. Information about the motivational factors and barriers to healthy eating among students; the sources of nutritional knowledge among Saudi Arabian adolescents, and the suggestions on how to increase healthy eating have been gathered. The research was a qualitative cross-sectional study using focus groups. Participants were Saudi Arabian students, aged 13 to 17 years, attending King Abdullah Academy, a Saudi Arabian international school located in Floris, an unincorporated area in Fairfax county, Virginia. Two focus groups were conducted, with ten participants in each. The participants recruited via fliers and by word of mouth. Focus groups were conducted at the school in a quiet and private room. The group consisted of a moderator and note-taker and no more than ten students for each focus group session. At the beginning of each session, information about age, gender, health condition, and period of living in the United States were collected. The questions focused on the youths' perceptions of healthy food, sources of their nutritional knowledge, motivations for healthy eating, barriers to following a healthy diet, and preferred ways to enhance making healthy food choices. The groups were conducted in English. All focus group sessions were audio-recorded and the data from each focus group were transcribed. All data were kept confidential. The Nvivo 11 Software was utilized in the data analysis. Key words and phrases from the data were determined and coded into categories, which classified into common themes. Perceptions of Healthful Foods , Sources of Nutritional Information, Factors Motivating the Eating of Healthful Foods, Barriers to Eating Healthful Foods, Methods of Promoting Healthful Eating and Desirable Components of a School-Based Program.
