This dissertation argues that the Shī'ah doctrine of a subordinate role of Jesus Christ to the Mahdi in the eschaton cannot be substantiated because of the apparent contradiction between the Shī'ah hadtth and the Qur'ān pertaining to the return of the Mahdi. The examination of premillennial theology as derived from the NT teaching and the writings of the church fathers has demonstrated the consistency of the doctrine of the parousia in biblical eschatology. This consistency is absent when evaluating the Shī'ah theology on the return of the Mahdi as originated in the hadith and the writings of modern Shī'ah scholars. Chapter 1 introduces the significance of the topic of the Mahdi and return of Christ in Shī'ah and Christianity, presents the thesis, and proposes the methodology by which the thesis will be accomplished. Chapter 2 establishes an understanding of the doctrine of the Mahdi by presenting the early Islamic history, particularly the encounter of Muhammad and Christian's heretical groups, history of Sunni-Shī'ahconflict, and the formulation of Shī'ah eschatology. Chapter 3 surveys the teaching of the return of Christ in biblical eschatology. It traces the prophecy of His incarnation in the Old Testament and the teaching of the parousia in the New Testament. Selected writings of the church fathers and premillennial theologians pertaining to this topic are presented.
