The figure of al-Mukhtar b. Abi 'Ubayd, the leader of a revolt that seized the city of al-Kufah in 66/685, appears in many early Arabic historians with differing emphases. Al-Mukhtar's career combined aspects of political opportunism (taking advantage of the power vacuum that existed in Iraq at the time due to the weakness of the Umayyads and the Zubayrids), skillful manipulation of Shi'i sentiment in al-Kufah, and use of support from the non-Arab population of the area (mawali/). In later writers, al-Mukhtar's legend became subject to elements of exaggeration: he became the type of "the liar," a man who pretended to be the recipient of revelations, even the founder of a religious sect. This dissertation gathers and translates the major accounts of al-Mukhtar's life. Its introduction discusses the ways in which these accounts differ in substance and method, paying particular attention to the accounts of Abu Mikhnaf (incorporated into al-Tabari's history) and al-Dinawari Al-Dinawari is shown to have emphasized the role of Persian mawali/ programmatically, while in Abu Mikhnaf's account, which is to be preferred for historical accuracy, al-Mukhtar is shown to have relied on a balance of Arab and mawali/ support. The relations between al-Mukhtar and his predecessor, Sulayman b. Surad, and between al-Mukhtar and Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyyah are also examined, using materials from al-Tabari Ibn Sa'd, al-Baladhuri and al-Mas'udi
