This thesis examines the natiure of young people's political activism in political parties and social movements in Britain in the early 2000s. Little research has been carried out on the lives of youth activists in British politics. A series of party membership studies have been carried out since the 1990s, although within these studies minimal attention has been paid to the experience of youth activists. A small body of work exists in relation to party youth organisations, but little attempt has been made to examine activists' motivations and experiences. In the field of social movements more research has been conducted concerning the motivations and experiences of activists. Once again, however, a relatively small amount of this relates specifically to the lives of youth activists. In researching youth activism using qualitative techniques, this thesis makes a significant contribution to understanding the nature of youth activism. This study is based on analysis of 52 semi-structured interviews with British activists under the age of 30. Twenty-nine of these interviews were carried out with activists in the youth organisations of the three main British political parties and the remaining 23 interviews were with individuals involved in a variety of environmental, peace, anti-war, anticapitalist and anti-globalisation groups and campaigns. This research has re-affinned the importance of political socialisation and network access in paving a way into activism. However, the precise nature of this socialisation differs greatly across the two groups who have been studied, having a significant impact on the level of activist consciousness at the point of entry to activism, and impacting on the nature of their political involvement. In terms of motivational factors, a variety of commonalities and differences have been found to exist between the two groups of youth activists who were studied. While they may manifest themselves in apparently very different ways, the pursuit of collective goods and career paths are of paramount importance for both groups of activists. However, while ideological, expressive and psychological incentives were found to play a central role in aiding and understanding of activism within the social movement commrmity, these incentives were found to be of very limited relevance in understanding youth activism in the political parties.
