The thesis examines the impact upon politics in Glasgow of the split in the Liberal party over Irish Home Rule and the subsequent Conservative-Liberal Unionist pact which survived until 1912 when the two parties amalgamated to form the Scottish Unionist Association. This electoral pact produced a great improvement in the Conservative performance at the polls, to the extent of giving them and their Liberal Unionist allies a majority of the Scottish seats and all the Glasgow ones in 1900. Thereafter their fortunes declined owing to the shelving of Home Rule by the Liberals, the defusing of the Scottish church disestablishment question, and the controversial tariff reform campaign. Relations between the Conservatives and Liberal Unionists are examined along with election results and campaigns.
