In the following pages we want to open up ideas, views, explanations being expressed in discussions, meetings and studies, and found in publications (mainly) from Africa on the place and function of religion in the modernization process taking place in this continent. We do realize that the field we try to cover is too vast, and we are . aware that by referring to Africa as a whole we cannot possibly include all the differences and varieties 'Africa' does encompass. Yet we do foster some hope that by classifying somehow the major emerging aspects and by making appropriate distinctions and some initial comments in a more general way, a frame of reference will emerge which will prove useful and helpful in analyzing and assessing more concrete local situations. After having presented some African remarks on 'Africa' and on 'Development', we want to focus attention on the views regarding the interrelationship of religion with development as seen from the African scene itself, however not without placing it in the wider context of African civilisation and culture, source and effect of religion.
