Nouakchott (Ar., Nwākshūṭ), capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is located on the Atlantic front of the Sahara, at N 18°06' and W 15°57', on a plain of alternating dunes and salt depressions. The name reportedly comes from Berber akshuẓan , a type of shell typical of the city's subsoil. A colonial fort was built in 1902 on the site of this water source with shells (in-w-akshuẓan) located on the transhumance route of the coastal tribes, but it was its role as a way station
