ʿĀrif Chelebī was a Mawlawī (Mevlevi) mystic, the grandson of Mawlānā Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī and the third khalīfa of the Mawlawiyya order. He was born in Konya on 8 Dhū l-Qaʿda 670/7 June 1272 as a son to Sulṭān Walad (Veled) (d. 712/1312) and Fāṭima Khātūn, the daughter of the goldsmith Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Zarkūb (d. 657/1258), who became Mawlānā Rūmī's favourite pupil after the death of Shams al-Dīn of Tabrīz (d. 645/1247). ʿĀrif's real name was Jalāl al-Dīn Farīdūn,
