The ʿAfār and the Issa are two important ethnic groups of the Horn of Africa, most of whom are Sunnī Muslims belonging to the Shāfiʿī madhhab . The ʿAfār (referred to as the Danāqil, sing. Danqalī, by mediaeval Arab geographers or as Adʿali and Adal by the Abyssinians) are the so-called heirs to the Muslim kingdom of Adʿali, or Adāl, which dates from the tenth/sixteenth century, located in the region around the port of Zaylaʿ, whence jihād campaigns were conducted against the Christian empire of Abyssinia (Ferry, 24-36).
