Prince Dipanagara of Yogyakarta (1785-1855) was the chief protagonist in the Java War (1825-30) and was exiled by the Dutch colonial authorities to Sulawesi (Celebes) (1830-55). In modern Indonesia, he is officially recognised as a national hero. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries Java was drawn into the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars (1792-1815).
