The history of Muslims in Burma (officially called Myanmar since 1989) has, despite some assimilation, been one largely of cultural enclaves, internal division, and cultural and political exclusion by the Burmese majority, punctuated by episodes of conflict and bloodshed. The communities of Burmese or Zerbadee Muslims, Indian Muslims, and the Rohingya of Arakan (present-day Rakhine State) are distinguished by their cultural traditions and relations with Burmese majority society and the government.
