Bulgaria is a country in the Balkans, bordered by the Black Sea in the east and the Danube River in the north. It comprises the Danubian Plain (ancient Lower Moesia), the Upper Thracian Plain, and the Rila-Rhodope massif. The Stara Planina mountain range (ancient Haemus), also called "Balkan" since Ottoman times, crosses Bulgaria from east to west. The early Bulgarian state was formed by Slavs and Bulgars in the seventh century C.E. The Indo-European Slavs had reached the Danube by the second half of the fifth century
