Bagirmi (Ar. Bāqirmī, Bāghirmī, Fr. Baguirmi) was a kingdom in present-day central Chad. Situated between the kingdoms of Kanem (Ar. Kānim) and Wadai (Ar. Wāday, Waddāy, Fr. Ouaddaï), north of the Chari (Shari, the principal river feeding Lake Chad), Bagirmi was one of the southernmost Sudanic states. The kingdom was formed probably around 925/1520, through the unification of several smaller states under the Bārma, an ethnic group related the Hajerai who lived in the hills east of Bagirmi.
