Chancery , in a pre-1500 Islamic administrative context, denotes an office where official documents were produced and recorded, copies of which were generally preserved in archives . The chancery was generally one of the main departments of premodern administrations, along with offices handling the financial administration (income and expenditure) and institutions dealing with judicial matters. While relatively few documents survive from before 1500, there is evidence that archives existed at least from Umayyad times and probably earlier.
