Arabesk is a hybrid genre of Arab-style music in Turkey, which was popular between the late 1960s and the early 1990s. For the most part, it is produced and consumed in the country itself, though many stars associated with it-İbrahim Tatlıses (b. 1952) and Orhan Gencebay (b. 1944) for instance-enjoy broad popularity elsewhere in the Balkans and Middle East, and amongst diaspora communities. The genre draws on long traditions of (somewhat caricatured) Arab vocal styles in republican Turkey, as well as Egyptian film music circulated in Turkey
