Aḥmad Yār (1768-1845) was a Panjābī poet known for his narrative romances drawn from local, Islamic, and Indian sources. The dates generally accepted for his life (1768-1845) are based on his comment that he was seventy when he was commissioned to write the Shāhnāma-yi Ranjīt Singh in 1838, and on the year of his last work, Aḥsan al-qaṣaṣ , completed in 1842. Self-statements inserted into several of his poems confirm his birth in Islāmgaŕh, near Jalālpūr in District Gujrāt, and that the latter part of his
