Almucantar , also almacantar, is the Latin term used by Western astronomers to denote, on the plates of the planispheric astrolabe, the circles parallel to the horizon for a given geographical latitude. The term derives from Arabic al-muqanṭara , pl. al-muqanṭarāt , in the phrase al-dāʾira al-muqanṭara , that is, "the circle formed like the arch of a bridge (qanṭara) ."
